Continuing its growth as the run specialty industry heads into 2022, Gazelle Sports will be opening its sixth location in Downtown Grand Rapids in Spring/Summer of 2022.
Founded in Kalamazoo, MI, in 1985, Gazelle Sports currently has locations in Birmingham, Grand Rapids (East Beltline), Holland, Kalamazoo and Northville.
The new downtown Grand Rapids store will be its first location to open since 2016.
“As a business that started in downtown Kalamazoo more than 35 years ago, we believe in the power of local business adding to the vibrancy and experience of a great downtown community,” said Jen Brummitt, CEO. “The vision for downtown Grand Rapids as a retail and wellness destination is a great fit for our organization, and we look forward to further committing to Grand Rapids by planting our roots on Monroe Center.”
“The pandemic had a significant impact on our small business community. As we look to build back from the pandemic, the Downtown Development Authority and City are committed to attracting unique, community-focused retailers that will drive new customers into the downtown area in support of our existing retail base,” says Grand Rapids mayor Rosalynn Bliss.
“I applaud Gazelle Sports for their longstanding commitment to West Michigan and am excited to welcome them to our downtown community.”
The planned 3600-square-foot store will serve as a hub for the Downtown Grand Rapids run community, including the chain’s largest event — She Runs Grand Rapids Half Marathon, 10K and 5K (formerly Gazelle Girl).
The new location is being made possible through a partnership with Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI) and Rockford Construction.
“I am excited to have Gazelle Sports join our downtown,” adds Richard App, Rentention & Attraction Specialist for the city of Grand Rapids. “Gazelle is a community and trusted industry leader and will be a valuable anchor for Monroe Center, which is our Main Street of downtown Grand Rapids and the Hotel District Business Association.”
